RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) faces a unique challenge. In total RNA, the majority of the RNA species present will be ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs) or sample-specific messenger RNAs (mRNAs). Since the abundant RNAs obscure the true biological phenomena that are being studied, they should be removed prior to sequencing, thus reducing the number of reads required to obtain the information of interest.
