The COVID-19 public health crisis affects everyone in our global community, and many scientists are working very hard to gain more knowledge about the SARS-CoV-2 virus (previously 2019-nCoV) and develop diagnostic tests, treatments and vaccines. Crucial questions about this virus need to be answered so quick and reliable research tools matter now more than ever. We at BIOKÉ support the fight against COVID-19 by offering a range of high quality products for virus research, from viral purification kits to qPCR plates, together with our reliable technical support.

During this COVID-19 pandemic you can expect the same quality and support from us as before. Viral purification products

MACHEREY-NAGEL (MN)

Multiple labs have included MACHEREY-NAGEL's NucleoSpin and NucleoMag kits for isolation of viral RNA into their workflows, among them the two WHO reference laboratories, the Institut Pasteur Paris (France) and the National Institute of Health (Thailand). We are supporting all labs by providing guidelines for sample preparation and nucleic acid extraction with MN kits in compliance with WHO and CDC recommendations. The recommendations include all our NucleoSpin and NucleoMag kits suitable for extraction of viral RNA. MN protocol recommendations for respiratory samples (swabs, sputum, bronchoalveolar lavage).   2. NucleoSpin® Dx Virus kit contains Proteinase K and 1.5 mL Tubes, which are not required for SARS-CoV-2 isolation.

Viral nucleic acid isolation from water samples

Many researchers are now starting to use wastewater testing to monitor COVID-19 infection rates. Routine wastewater surveillance might be an efficient, non-invasive tool to detect new COVID-19 infections. For efficient isolation of nucleic acids from water samples it is essential to concentrate viral particles prior to nucleic acid purification.

Nucleic acid purification from concentrated water samples:
We recommend to either use NucleoMag® DNA/RNA Water or NucleoSpin® RNA Stool for nucleic acid purification from concentrated water samples for the following reasons:

  • Superior PCR inhibitor removal characteristics
  • RNA as well as DNA can be extracted

 

 


New England Biolabs (NEB)

Extraction of RNA is often the first step in viral detection assays and has become an increasingly important laboratory technique in the midst of this global pandemic. Though NEB does not offer a kit specifically designed for viral RNA extraction, the Monarch Total RNA Miniprep Kit has been successfully used to extract RNA from various samples including saliva, buccal swabs, and simulated nasopharyngeal samples.

Monarch® Total RNA Miniprep Kit (NEB #T2010): This comprehensive kit include reagents for extracting RNA from a wide variety of sample types with a fast and user-friendly workflow.

  • Quickly and easily purify up to 100 µg of high quality total RNA (>20 nt)
  • Purified RNA is suitable for downstream reactions, such as RT-qPCR and library prep for next gen sequencing
  • Elute in as little as 30 µl (RNA samples can be further concentrated following purification using our Monarch RNA Cleanup columns or kits)

Rapid Detection of Coronavirus (COVID-19) RNA

New England Biolabs

Virus detection often utilizes nucleic acid amplification to identify the presence of specific sequences in SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA. These methods include RT-qPCR for real time quantitation and loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) for robust amplification performed at a single reaction temperature.

SARS-CoV-2 Rapid Colorimetric LAMP Assay Kit (NEB# E2019) utilizes loop-mediated isothermal amplification for use in the analysis of SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19.

  • Colorimetric LAMP enables simple, visual detection (pink-to-yellow) of amplification of SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid
  • Reduce risk of carryover contamination, with UDG and dUTP included in the master mix

WarmStart Colorimetric LAMP 2X Master Mix with UDG (NEB# M1804) is an optimized formulation of Bst 2.0 WarmStart DNA Polymerase and WarmStart RTx in a special low-buffer reaction solution containing a visible pH indicator for rapid and easy detection of LAMP and RT-LAMP reactions. The inclusion of dUTP and UDG in the master mix reduces the possibility of carryover contamination between reactions.

  • Easily detect amplification with a simple pink-to-yellow color change
  • Reduce risk of carryover contamination, with UDG and dUTP included in the master mix

Facilitating Detection of SARS-CoV-2: Precursor Studies with Luna® RT-qPCR and Colorimetric RT-LAMP Reagents

This new application note is presented in the context of the COVID-19 global pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. To help accelerate diagnostics development efforts, we demonstrate the detection of synthetic SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA targets using NEB’s RT-qPCR and colorimetric RT-LAMP reagents. The colorimetric RT-LAMP work is a follow-up on a recent publication by researchers at NEB, in collaboration with researchers at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China, demonstrating the potential of colorimetric RT-LAMP detection of SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA purified from patient samples.
